Mould Base System Saves Time and Money
Using a newly developed modular mould base system, injection moulds can be produced economically and quickly. This greatly facilitates production of smaller quantities.
The Heilbronn mouldmaker August Läpple GmbH & Co. KG exhibited its new modular mould base system in public for the first time at Euromold 2005. The principle is simple: both mould insert halves, i.e. core and cavity side, are in a separate base, or frame. The inserts are interchangeable, so that the frame can accommodate different inserts. To change the inserts takes less than 30 minutes. As a result, it is possible to change from one part to another very quickly even during series production.
The frame concept increases flexibility and lowers the costs for mouldmaking. Since the frame can be used with various inserts, cost savings of up to 40% are possible. In addition, because of the high degree of standardisation, the lead time between ordering the mould and starting production can be shortened by about 30%. At the same time, the mould base system satisfies all quality requirements associated with production of series parts and prototypes.
This frame concept is suitable, above all, for short production runs and for production of different versions of a part on derivative moulds. Läpple has already sold over forty injection moulds based on this concept. Initial efforts focussed on large parts, especially bumper fascias and spoilers for cars. In the future, however, the system is also expected to find use in other areas, for instance, in the production of automotive instrument panels.
