Lower Energy Costs During Injection Moulding
A newly developed accessory compensates for the reactive power (power factor correction), thus reducing power consumption during injection moulding. The processor can reduce the costs for electricity and decrease the load on the grid while contributing to environmental protection.
The electric motors that serve as drives in injection moulding machines can be considered inductive loads from an electrical engineering standpoint. This means that they create and dispel magnetic fields in a cyclical manner. The motor takes the energy required for this – the so-called reactive power – from the electric grid and returns it to the grid when the magnetic field is dispelled. Put simply: the reactive power continually enters and leaves the power grid.
This results in unnecessary costs for the plastics processor, since removal as well as return of energy usually entails a charge levied by the electric utility. Furthermore, the reactive power reduces the capacity of the grid to provide active power.
The Economiser developed by Krauss-Maffei eliminates the return of the reactive power to the power grid. By compensating for the reactive power dynamically, the Economiser takes less electric energy from the grid. The reactive power is now used to create a magnetic field. This has not been possible with previously employed means of compensation.
Since the reactive power circulates between the injection moulding machine and Economiser, the load on the rest of the grid is reduced. The capacity of the electric lines is available completely to supply active power.
With this type of power factor correction, the plastics processor also contributes actively to environmental protection. The energy savings conserves resources and reduces environmental impact. In this way, the Economiser contributes to a sustainable and responsible economy.
For the CX Series from Krauss-Maffei, the Economiser is available as a beside-the-press accessory. On the large machines in the MX Series, the Economiser is installed above the pump drive.
