Film for 3-Dimensional Displays

At the K 2013 in Düsseldorf, Bayer MaterialScience introduced special polycarbonate films for 3-dimensional displays with a smooth, freely configurable surface and a high- definition image. These displays employ the so-called back projection technique. In indicating instruments and displays, the film is converted into a luminous display screen with the aid of a light source behind it.

According to the information provided, the films permit display of high-definition (HD) images. Common film processing methods can be used to form the film, giving designers great freedom even in the case of large parts. The films are scratch-resistant and available with a surface ranging from transparent to black and from high-gloss to matte. Products for touchscreen applications that are insensitive to perspiration, cleaning agents and chemicals even after being touched many times are under development.

Such displays can be used, for instance, in automobile interiors to present important information to the driver at a glance. The computer and the electronics industries as well as many other sectors with optical displays can benefit from such products. Digital advertising media represent an additional possible application. Such displays make it possible to present several products and messages "in depth" on the advertising surface.
