System for producing ozone from oxygen in the air

Water in an open circuit becomes contaminated with algae and microorganisms in the course of time. It must thus be protected or changed often. To eliminate biofilms in open water baths in extrusion lines, BWT Wassertechnik GmbH offers special ozone systems with which the water quality in the cooling section is stabilized without having any adverse effect on product quality or product characteristics.

It is known from actual practice that the biologically active nature of water can lead to problems in the production process. For example, algae must be removed at regular intervals from the walls of open water troughs used in extrusion lines. Algae growth directly at the tip of the die can have an adverse impact on product quality. In addition, the water must be changed relatively frequently.

The systems developed by BWT produce ozone (O3 ) from the oxygen in the ambient air. Ozone is a strong, nonpolluting disinfecting and oxidizing agent. It oxidizes organic and inorganic substances contained in water, and kills germs and viruses in water in particular. Because of its high oxidation potential, ozone also decomposes biofilms and prevents the growth of algae that attempt to establish colonies on the walls of a water container. At the same time, ozone produces no harmful side products.

Treatment of the cooling water with ozone improves product quality and equipment availability. The extrusion process becomes more stable and the reject rate is reduced. Since cleaning is required less often, the amount of labor involved is also less. Furthermore, water consumption is reduced, because the cooling water is changed at longer intervals.

Compared to treatment of cooling water with biocides, ozone technology offers many handling benefits in addition to the technological advantages. For instance, storage and handling of chemicals are eliminated. In addition, employees do not come into contact with biocide-containing water. Moreover, wetting of plastic parts with a biocide is often unacceptable to customers.
