The present invention provides for a synthetic closure (20), in particular a synthetic wine closure, for a product retaining container constructed for being inserted and securely retained in a portal forming neck of said container, said closure comprising at least one thermoplastic polymer and at least one fatty acid derivative. With the present invention it is possible to provide a synthetic closure that has a foam density of less than about 350 kg/m 3 , in particular less than about 300 kg/m 3 , and - at the same time - an oxygen transfer rate (OTR) as determined by Mocon measurement using 100% oxygen of less than about 0.025 cc/day/closure, in particular less than about 0.015 cc/day/closure.
