Investigation on the Durability of Molds made from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP): A Comparison of Epoxy and BMI Matrix Systems

The main advantage of CFRP molds is the match of thermal expansion between mold and part. A drawback of this technology is the limited durability due to decreasing vacuum integrity. Goal of this experimental study is to investigate the relation of the degradation of the matrix and the resulting increasing air permeability of the laminate and cyclic thermal loading. For epoxy based laminates the results show very little ageing effects up to a temperature of 150 °C, whereas a severe decrease of characteristic values from 250 cycles at 180 °C is observed. Bismaleimide (BMI) based coupons show very little effects of ageing at 180°C after 500 cycles.
