Device to Determine Rheological Properties of Thermoplastics Blended with Chemical Foaming Agents

In this contribution an in-line measurement device is presented, which allows the determination of rheological properties for injection moulding process optimization and simulation of thermoplastic resins blended with chemical foaming agents (CFA). The main challenges in the development process are seen in two aspects. First, during a measurement the pressure within the measurement channel of the device must be above 4 MPa. Otherwise the foaming process is initiated during the measurement. Furthermore, during a common injection moulding process shear rates above 1000 1/s are typical. Hence, the measurement device must be able to cover experiments with shear rates above 1000 1/s. Verification measurement are conducted on a polypropylene (PP) and a polypropylene mixed with 2 wt % chemical foaming agent (PP + 2 % CFA).
