Thermoplastic Preforms Fulfilling the Requirements for High-Performance Lightweight Constructions

This study concerns investigating an innovative process for manufacturing continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite components for automotive applications. Unlike the conventional thermoplastic impact extrusion process, this involves using a near-net shape manufacturing technique to layer unidirectional tape materials, load-specific and three-dimensional, and then consolidating them by compression molding. This production process makes it possible to manufacture components in minute intervals and, at the same time, to integrate functions with long-fiber-reinforced injection molding material. In crashes, their layered, load-specific three-dimensional configuration enables such components to maintain their structure to the optimum. In addition, whilst providing the exact same energy absorption capacity as steel components, these components are less than half the weight.
