Increasing the load bearing potential of fibre-polymer-composites structures by aimed introduced internal stresses

Developing highly stressed fibre-polymer-composite structures is often impeded by the low strength of unidirectional layers when loaded by transverse or shear stress. Furthermore thermally introduced internal stresses reduce the low strength additionally. It is possible to compensate these negative influences by introducing additional internal stresses with opposite sign into the laminate. Two processes for introducing the favourable internal stresses are presented. The computing of the stress state can be performed by the classical laminate theory. Testing pressurized tubes and pressure vessels proof the potential of aimed internal stresses to increase the crack initiation limits dramatically. Further tests show that the favourable internal stresses remain in the laminates and can be used for years.
