Design and Dimensioning of Drive-Shafts Made of Fiber-Polymer-Composites

This thesis covers some fundamental principles which are essential when designing drive shafts made of fiber-polymer-composites (frp). - Simple equations are given for an initial design approach of cylindrical, hollow shaft sections. For those sections additionally two new methods are presented for designing a material-specific and load-dependent laminate. The loading of axial-symmetric transition sections is approximated using simple equations. The stress-strain distribution of overlapping shaft-hub joints is analytically derived for axial-symmetric torsional loaded tubes. Thus the design of very strong yet cost-efficient load introduction gets possible. Basic equations as well as a continuous and a discontinuous manufacturing strategy are introduced for filament winding. The results of an extensive testing of torsional loaded shafts enable the design engineer to perform a detailed dimensioning of shafts and near optimum use of the material.
