Changing of Property Values from Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP) due to Corrosive Influences

Physical properties of fiber reinforced plastics often show broad distributions. This applies for new material and especially for composites, which had been exposed to a chemical attack by corrosive media under mechanical load. When damaging proceeds not only the tolerable loading decreases but the reliability of the property values decreases as well.

The constancy and accuracy of characteristic values from fiber reinforced duroplastic materials was collected and evaluated at specific types of laminates. Important influences are discussed in detail. By doing so the point of view changes from the usual deterministic method to probabilistic aspects.

Corrosive attack by means of aggressive environmental media e.g. thinned mineral acids can lead to sudden, often unexpected breakdowns. Thereby acids and leaches show very different attack mechanisms.

Acids can excite the environmental stress cracking (ESC) in glass fibers. Finally, this can lead to dangerous and sudden breakdowns of the structure, while an alkaline attack leads to environmental stress cracking of the composite at whole.
