First Production Part Based on a Carbon Fiber Compound

Very high rigidity combined with a low density is a feature of the carbon fiber compound from Wipag Süd GmbH & Co KG, Neuburg on the Danube, Germany. Aside from polyamide, the starting material for this is secondary carbon fibers obtained from the production of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic. This, says the manufacturer, not only makes it cost-effective to incorporate chopped carbon fibers into a thermoplastic polymer that can be injection molded, but also makes filler loads of up to 40 % feasible. Further advantages of the compound are low thermal expansion and excellent aging and chemical resistance.

The compound is already finding application in an injection molded kite-board fin, where its low weight proves to be especially advantageous for speed and maneuverability.
