Inexpensive Carbon Fiber Compounds
Inexpensive access to carbon fiber-reinforced plastics is offered by Wipag Süd GmbH & Co. KG, Neuburg a. d. Donau, Germany. High rigidity, compressive strength and tensile strength, good thermal and electrical conductivity and permeability for X-ray and radar beams are generally associated with high costs for carbon fiber-reinforced materials. Thanks to a technology developed in-house, Wipag offers an inexpensive alternative by mixing thermoplastics for injection molding applications with carbon fibers (Fig. 6). The precious fibers are won from offcuts from the production of carbon fiber car bodies and from secondary fibers from other sources. The properties of the carbon fiber compounds correspond more or less to the well-known characteristics of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymers.
