Materials for Extreme Conditions
Thermoplastic high-performance polymers from Victrex Europa GmbH, Hofheim, Germany, can be used under extreme conditions. For the needs of the oil and gas industry, new thermoplastic high-performance polymers were developed for use at temperatures from -196 to +200 °C, which are intended for seal systems. With Victrex OGS 125, a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is available that was specially developed for compression molding of large seals.
Victrex AE 250 composite and Aptiv films are PEEK-based intermediates and finished products intended for the aerospace and automotive industries. The very thin PEEK films can be used as electrical insulators in electric motors and increase the installed amount of copper by 5 % , thus improving the power density of the motors. PEEK composites offer the aero industry not only good specific properties, but also, because they can be processed as thermoplastics, shorter processing times in comparison to traditional materials, according to the manufacturer.
