Vestakeep PEEK Polyetheretherketone

Proven as an Implant Material

A newly developed shoulder anchor made from PEEK (figure: Evonik)

Working together with Argomedical AG, Cham, Germany, IST Innovative Shoulder Technology AG, Cham, has expanded its product line of knot-free Plug-n-Twist shoulder anchors: for the first time, the new shoulder anchor is being produced in Vestakeep PEEK polyetheretherketone from Evonik Industries AG, Essen, Germany. Plug-n-Twist anchors are anchors for the second row of minimally invasive, arthroscopic sutures attaching the rotator cuff to the shoulder.

With no change in product design, the anchor is now available in a PEEK version, a non-resorbable plastic, in addition to the titanium version. Use of the new anchor does not require any modification to intraoperative procedures. Thus, the long suture threads of the first medial anchor row that are left in the body are guided through the eyelet in the tip of the Plug-n-Twist anchor and then secured in place by the anchor’s pressure against the bone. In the so-called interference procedure, the suture threads used to repair the defect are clamped between the bone and anchor and securely held in position. Thanks to the rounded tip of the implant, there is significantly less soft tissue irritation when the anchor is inserted into the shoulder. The innovative design allows the Plug-n-Twist anchor to be tapped into place and, if necessary, removed by means of unscrewing.

According to information from knowledgeable specialists, PEEK has proven its utility as an implant material. It is biocompatible and ideal for imaging methods, since it does not generate artifacts.

A further advantage of PEEK as anchor material lies in its handling in a subsequent revision operation if the anchor is cut in two with a bone saw and must then be removed.
