Vertical single-platen injection molding machine
For the Last Sealing Lip
Windsor Kunststofftechnologie GmbH, Hanau, Germany, has designed a vertical single-platen injection molding machine for a special application at Volkswagen. In order to mold sealing lips of TPE onto the PP wheel arch linings of the VW Golf, an operator places a set of components – the left-hand and right-hand linings in each case – into the machine. One part holder fixes the wheel arch linings, moves under the vertically positioned injection mold and transfers the parts with a vertical upward stroke. The mold is equipped with hydraulic slide bars that clamp and seal the parts, and at the same time form the contour for the second component. The slide bars are also locked hydraulically after closing – the clamping force is high enough that the wheel arch lining remains in position during the injection molding process. The wheel arch linings are subsequently returned to the operator for removal in the reverse cycle.
The single-platen injection molding machine for which Windsor has been granted utility model protection by the German Patent Office is an alternative to the classic two-component injection molding. By contrast with a conventional injection molding machine, it has only a platen to hold the mold consisting of just one half instead of a clamping unit. Since the machine has neither a moving platen nor machine columns, there are a very wide variety of possibilities for positioning the parts produced in the first manufacturing step on a standard injection molding machine without the risk of collisions between the mold or the molding with the single-platen machine. This new injection molding machine type is therefore outstandingly suited to the molding of a second component onto large plastic moldings.
