Low-Friction and Stiff
To produce the dose dial sleeve of its new disposable variable-dose injector pens for insulin and other drugs, Ypsomed AG, based in Burgdorf, Switzerland, specified a new, ultra-low-friction grade of Delrin polyacetal (POM) from DuPont de Nemours (Deutschland) GmbH in Neu-Isenburg, Germany.
The Uno-Pen is a modern disposable pen for manual injection of insulin and other drugs from a prefilled glass cartridge. A principal feature of the pen is its ease of use. The pen operates on the "twist and inject principle", in which the POM dose dial sleeve located between the housing and piston rod plays a key role in the smooth functioning of the pen. It is used by the patient to set the required dose of insulin to be injected and interacts mechanically with the piston rod to dispense the required amount.
The new, ultra-low-friction Delrin grade is suitable for high-volume manufacture and has been specifically developed for precision injection molding of medical device components. It is supplied with the required FDA and EU food contact compliance, meets the test criteria of USP Class VI and ISO 10993-5 and -11, and is produced according to GMP standards. Another reason for the selection of this material was its suitability for laser marking when using an appropriate masterbatch. This laser method is employed to mark the dose settings on the dose dial sleeve. The new grade also exhibits the high strength and stiffness typical of POM. These properties permit snapfit assembly of the component and help ensure reliable and durable mechanical performance.
