Vacurema range of plastics recycling systems
Reheating in the Container
The Vacurema range of plastics recycling systems from Erema Engineering Recycling Maschinen und Anlagen Ges.m.b.H., Ansfelden, Austria, has now been given category H approval by the FDA (US food and Drug Administration). This extends the scope of possible applications for the recycled PET (rPET) to packaging for frozen or refrigerated ready meals that can be directly reheated in the container before consumption. Previously, the rPET produced by these systems was approved for FDA applications C to G. The packaging may consist of up to 100% recycled material.
Two independent institutes, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Munich, Germany, and Keller and Heckman LLP in Brussels, Belgium, carried out the extension to the scope of approval using various methods, including challenge tests. The approval also applies to systems that have already been supplied.
