Ultem Film UTF120

PEI Film for Dielectric High-Temperature Capacitors

Capacitors are major components of electrical products, used for various applications in electronics and electrical systems. Sabic (Saudi Basic Industries Corporation), in Riyadh, Saudi-Arabia, recently launched a polytherimide (PEI) film, named Ultem film UTF120. The material is designed for capacitors with high energy density. The company states that these components are able to store, over a long period of time, large amounts of energy without significant current leakage, i.e. loss of charge, even at high temperatures.

The Ultem film UTF120 is designed to meet the increased demand for lightweight, compact capacitors with high energy density (© Sabic)

Ultem film UTF120 is a heat-resistant dielectric film with high energy density, which fulfills the technical demands for use in dielectric film capacitors. According to producer information, its properties remain stable over a wide range of temperatures (-40°C to +150°C) and frequencies. Properties include stable capacitance, good insulation resistance, high dielectric constant (DC) and low dissipation factor (DF). By extending the range of operating temperatures for capacitors, the new film will open up new areas of application and increase reliability. Sabic claims that this reduces or even eliminates the measures necessary to actively cool converter applications. Requiring no active cooling, the user can set up a system design for electrical automotive applications, which is more flexible and simple. According to company information, this can also be adapted to ultrathin film applications for other areas.

The film adheres excellently to metal. It features high stability in terms of temperature, dimension and mechanics, and is inherently flame retardant. Capacitors using this material are expected to resist the industry-standard 260°C reflow soldering process. The PEI film was developed to enable good handling by metallization, winding and flattening. It can be processed on existing equipment and has been validated with both film foil and metalized electrodes including patterned electrodes, as well as flat and tapered metalized electrode designs. Potential applications include automotive components such as DC/DC converters, electronic products, high-intensity discharge lighting, LED lighting and LCD backlight, as well as film capacitors for mass transportation and renewable energies.
