Easier Lightweight Construction

Thermoplastic foam injection molding is ideal for further exploiting the potential of plastics for lightweight construction, while making use of the special advantages of the process. Trexel GmbH, Siegen, Germany, takes these special advantages of thermoplastic foam injection molding into account, presenting a new series of equipment for the MuCell process. The "T-Series" can be easily operated, requiring only two parameters to be entered, and thereby makes handling in production easier. The compact design includes fully automatically regulated blowing agent metering. The new equipment series is available either as a stand-alone standard version with a graphical user interface (Fig.) or without a monitor and integrated in the machine control system.

In addition, Trexel presents a newly developed interior assembly for a well-known OEM that has been launched in series production. The laminated article was manufactured by thin-wall technology, which was only made possible by the MuCell process thanks to the resulting reduction of melt viscosity and more uniform pressure distribution. In addition, there is a wall-thickness/rib ratio of 1 : 1 with no visible sink marks. Thanks to the systematic implementation of physical foaming, the part weight could be reduced by 50 % compared to its predecessor, which still reduces the assembly weight by 20 %.
