Transparent Copolyester

Transparent as Glass

A new transparent copolyester is a suitable alternative to polycarbonate, polystyrene, and glass (figure: Perstorp)

The Swedish Perstorp Group is showcasing a newly developed copolyester at K2013 under the name Akestra. Its sparkling, glass-like appearance makes this high-performance plastic a genuine alternative to polycarbonate, polystyrene, and glass. The new material can be used, for example in transparent, durable, dishwasher-proof single- and multi-trip packaging in place of polycarbonate.

Thanks to its high glass transition temperature and amorphous and high-strength properties, Akestra is particularly suitable for food contact packaging. Its properties such as transparency, heat resistance, and high melt strength open up wide-ranging design opportunities for packaging applications. In combination with polyethylene terephthalate (PET), it creates a finer cell structure, allowing further weight savings.
