Victrex Japan Inc. and Thank-Metal Co. Ltd, manufacturers of precision machinery and metal processing components, have developed a high-performance, pressure-sensitive, adhesive tape, known as Tough Tape, for various types of batteries. The tape is based on Aptiv films, which are made from PEEK (grade: Victrex). The high-performance, pressure-sensitive tape offers a unique combination of properties far superior to those of polyimide (PI)-, polyether imide (PEI)- and PTFE-backed tapes. Compared with PI-backed adhesive tapes, it has higher chemical resistance, better tear strength, lower moisture absorption and improved barrier properties.
Compared with PTFE-backed tapes, pressure-sensitive tapes made from Aptiv film have outstanding mechanical properties, better abrasion resistance, higher dielectric strength, lower smoke and toxic gas emissions in the event of fire, lower permeability and lower specific gravity. Tough Tape adheres to many different contact surfaces, such as steel, ceramics or glass. The tapes are available in 25 µm backing thickness and a range of widths, depending on customer needs. The application focus for this product is in the electrical and semi-conductor industries, where there is a need for non-electrically conductive adhesive tapes, e.g. as being protective tabs for 18650 lithium batteries.
Demand for this tape is also anticipated in many other sectors, such as the automotive industry and aerospace engineering. Examples of possible applications include lighting that requires high electrical insulation and cable coatings, heat shields, and plain bearings needing high abrasion resistance.
