Thermoforce Thermally Conductive Compounds
Polymeric Metal Replacement
Leis Polytechnik polymere Werkstoffe GmbH, Ramstein-Miesenbach, Germany, has launched its Thermoforce series of thermally conductive compounds. Not only are the highly filled polymers thermally conductive, but they can also be rendered either electrically conductive or electrically insulating. The specific properties of the materials are determined by the combination of polymer base, e. g. polyamide (PA), polyether sulfone (PES), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) or polyetheretherketone (PEEK), filler additive package and process engineering. The compounds reach thermal conductivities of up to 20 W/(m K), with the exact figure depending on modification and anisotropy. According to the manufacturer, good material and processing properties are retained despite high filler loads. The individual components can be selected at will to match the requirements profile.
The manufacturer maintains that the compounds support integral functionality, i. e. a number of different requirements can be met simultaneously in the one component, such as electrical insulation coupled with heat dissipation. The materials can be used in the electrical and electronics sector, automotive, mechanical engineering, and LED technology, for multifunctional cooling and heating elements such as housings, coils or cooling units, for temperature control in mechatronic systems, and sliding bearings and motor housings. To an extent depending on the polymer/additive combination, specialty grades such as materials for food-contact parts and specific colored grades are feasible.
