POM homopolymers offer compelling mechanical properties, such as strength and stiffness, while POM copolymers are notable for their good chemical resistance. In Tecaform AX, Ensinger GmbH, Nufringen, Germany, is now offering a new semifinished product (POM-C) which combines the beneficial properties of both types of POM. Its impact strength has also been improved relative to predecessor products.
The new property set is primarily beneficial in food processing. Improved mechanical properties combined with undiminished chemical resistance to conventional cleaning agents further extends the application spectrum of POM as a versatile engineering polymer in this field. Naturally, Tecaform AX complies with regulatory requirements, such as FDA and (EU) 10/2011 for repeated food contact. For mechanical engineering applications involving contact of the materials with lubricants, its enhanced chemical resistance, relative to homopolymers, can offer an additional benefit.
Other application areas which will benefit from this new semifinished product are the transport and materials handling sectors, the automotive industry, electronic and electrical engineering, domestic appliances and precision engineering. Typical applications are agitating and kneading elements, rollers, casters, sliding bearings, sliding rails, gears, spring elements, connectors, insulators, housing parts, snap connectors and seals.
