Modular Hybrid Technology for Complex Processes

A demanding application for the automotive and consumer markets in terms of processing and application will be shown by Sumitomo (SHI) Demag Plastics Machinery GmbH in Schwaig, Germany: The production of a backlit, decorated door strip using in-mold decoration (IMD). Fitted with activeMotionControl technology, the Systec Servo used for the process involves a hybrid drive concept that is optimized for maximum performance and utmost energy efficiency when cycle times exceed about 10 s, as is frequently the case with molded parts for the automotive or home appliance industries, and for consumer goods.
Rather than using a full-surface cohesive and printed plastic film, the decoration is an open-pore wood structure, which, in addition to the surface print for the daytime design, also permits ambient lighting as a night design. The films with the decor are passed through the mold (HBW Gubesch) by a film feeding device (Leonhard Kurz) and back molded with PC/ABS. A six-axis Kuka robot removes the finished part from the mold and feeds it to a UV curing and cleaning station. All controls of the individual system components are visible and operable via a VNC integration in the molder’s control system. The machine comes with the "activeMouldWater" module for electronic monitoring of mold tempering based on temperature and flow, plus an OPC-UA communications interface in accordance with Industry 4.0.
