Needle Stroke Control System for Shadow-Free Gates
At EuroMold 2009, hot-runner manufacturer Incoe International of Rödermark, Germany, presented its new SoftGate needle stroke control system for hydraulic needle shut-off systems. Through exact setting of the opening time, injection molders can determine how quickly the flow cross section at the nozzle tip will be released. This provides a simple means of directly influencing flow in the nozzle tip and preventing flow marks on the molding surface. This is particularly important in direct gating with a hot runner onto visible surfaces, where flow marks not only intrude as unsightly flaws but also cause problems in downstream production operations such as painting or coating.
Existing hot-runner systems can be easily retrofitted with SoftGate. The needle stroke control system consists essentially of a control module integrated into the hydraulic circuit outside the mold. Minimal cost and effort are required to integrate the control system into the overall injection mold control network. Working in conjunction with other mold control functions, especially temperature control at the gate and in the region of the nozzle tip, the new control module greatly improves the performance of the overall system for many applications, according to the manufacturer.
