Microcapsules for Various Applications
Follmann GmbH & Co. KG, Minden, Germany, offers a microencapsulation technology which is claimed to be sustainable and versatile. It consists in packaging various ingredients into microcapsules that can be opened under precisely defined conditions. It thus affords a way of providing sustainable protection for ingredients. Encapsulation is generally employed to transform liquid substances into a solid processing product.
The capsules have high, customizable stability which prevents the contents from being released prematurely or unintentionally. At their target site, they release their contents selectively by various mechanisms. Thermal opening, for instance, lends itself to core/shell microcapsules for use in detergents. Their opening temperature can be adjusted so that they open not in the wash, but specifically only during ironing.
This system is employed in various industries, such as polymerization technology, self-healing plastics, coatings, and in pharmaceuticals. These abruptly release ingredients such as fragrances, actives and catalysts at adjustable temperatures. In addition to the formaldehyde-containing systems otherwise commonly available on the market, the Follmann range includes formaldehyde-free alternatives and microcapsules based on biopolymers.
Follmann offers various capsule sizes of up to 100 μm, customizable core/wall ratios, customized crosslinking and different release mechanisms. The customer is thus able to choose whether the active ingredient in the capsule is released by mechanical stress or at specific temperatures.
