Inline Process Control with Thermography
SKZ – Das Kunststoff-Zentrum
Quality assurance of the weld seam of joined plastic components is of crucial importance. Therefore the industry’s has a great demand for analytical means that permit rapid, reliable and non-destructive testing of weld seams without complicated sample preparation. At SKZ – Das Kunststoff Zentrum, Würzburg, Germany, the applicability of passive thermography to the welding of plastics was investigated as part of a research project. The ultrasound, infrared, heated-tool butt-welding and vibration welding were examined in detail. Depending on the sample geometry, good results could be obtained.
For monitoring with thermography, software was developed at the SKZ, which automatically assesses the weld during the welding process and classifies components as "OK" or "not OK". In conjunction with partners, it is planned to improve this non-destructive inline test method.
