Self-Bonding Silopren Liquid Silicone Rubber
Improved Adhesion Performance
Momentive Performance Materials Inc. globally launches the Silopren LSR 27x9 liquid silicone rubber family at K 2016. This new self-bonding material addresses the rising demands for hard-soft designs, helps to achieve the bonding between silicone and thermoplastics, reduces assembly steps and meets various complex design requirements.
Consumer electronics, medical device, automotive and industrial manufacturers seek advanced adhesion technology between silicone elastomers and certain engineering plastics including PC (polycarbonate), PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) and co-polyesters in order to improve performance characteristics such as waterproofing, protection, durability and functionality. Momentive’s new self-bonding LSR technology offers a primerless solution that enables the combination of two materials via a two-shot over-molding process for a hard-soft design as well as cost-efficient manufacturing of high part-quantities in one integrated molding process. Silopren LSR 27x9 liquid silicone rubber does not require surface treatment on the substrates, and offers short cycle times and one step curing in order to help improve productivity and enhance design freedom.
"Momentive continues to lead the market in developing silicone elastomer solutions that enable design complexity and manufacturing efficiency,” said Holger Albrecht, Vice President, Elastomers. “Our newest offering advances adhesion technology for molded parts that have been previously unavailable in the market.”
Live Demonstrations of the Silopren Product Family
Momentive will feature Silopren liquid silicone rubbers (LSR) in a variety of live demonstrations in collaboration with industry partners at K 2016. In booth B15 in Hall 6, Momentive will feature 2-component LSR on LSR molding with Silopren LSR 2670 liquid silicone rubber in cooperation with Elmet and Arburg. Being a full system supplier, Elmet created a 4+4 cavity mold manufacturing egg-holders and built a fully automated turn-key cell by integrating an Arburg injection molding machine with its own peripheral devices and dosing system. The installed close-loop controlled color injection at the dosing system is a new feature which will be presented for the first time at the K fair. This innovation controls and documents the real amount of color or additive in the material, which is particularly relevant to the healthcare segment. The special system concept allows for 2-component molding on a 1-component LSR standard machine with only one LSR dosing system.
