Environmentally Friendly Packaging Material
Scanfill AB, a subsidiary of Scandinavia’s biggest plastic material compounder Polykemi AB, launches the environmentally friendly Scanfill Bio materials which are 50 % mineral-reinforced with the polymer part originating from renewable resources.
According to development manager Karl Branke, Scanfill received a lot of requests about developing a 100% oil-free material, and with the experience of their normal material consisting of 50% mineral base, the development to further develop a totally oil free material went quicker than anticipated. Scanfill have replaced the polymer part with plant-based polyethylene and together with mineral they can offer a product being climate neutral when it comes to carbon dioxide emission. All grades are approved for direct contact with food.
Scanfill Bio Foil is used for thermoformed packaging. It consists of 48% non-oil-based polymer and 52% mineral, which gives many beneficial properties. Besides the superb environmental benefits, the mineral gives strength and stiffness which enables thinner sheet thickness. Hence, the higher density of Scanfill Bio can be weight compensated. The mineral also gives higher heat conductivity and better molding properties. This, together with lower amount of polymer and lower material volume, gives an increased production speed.
Scanfill Bio Bottle material is designed for extrusion blow molding and consists of 55% non-oil-based HDPE and 45% mineral. The mineral gives good stiffness and high heat conductivity. The production speed can be increased significantly and the weight of the bottle can be kept the same by reducing the wall thickness. The mineral also gives an increased light barrier. This can lead to either prolonged shelf life or removal of the black light barrier layer sometimes use for the same purpose. The granulate can be colored in most colors and can be used in existing machine equipment and in existing tools.
Scanfill Bio Injection is an easy flowing grade based on non oil based polyethylene, suitable for injection molding. High stiffness and low environmental impact are two of the most prominent benefits for this product. If a higher weight of the packaging is unacceptable, the tooling must be adopted for thinner goods. Thus, this material is easiest to implement when tools are remodeled or in new projects.
