Ricordi chamber
A Faster Route to the Desired Result
Two innovations in the Biorep product range are made of materials from Sabic Innovative Plastics, Bergen op Zoom/Netherlands.
The so-called Ricordi chamber – a system for the more rapid and more efficient isolation of insulin-producing cells – is made of Ultem HU polyether imide (PEI). This thermoplastic can be autoclaved and is rigid, with a high mechanical strength, as well as being resistant to the highly alkaline media in which the work is generally carried out. Since production is faster than with the stainless steel that is normally employed, higher article numbers can be attained, thus bringing down the manufacturing costs.
The disposable perfusion tray – a unit that is used for transplant procedures – is made entirely of Cycolac HM acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). This styrene grade is tough, offers resistance to chemicals and is bondable. Use of this disposable product allows a large number of institutions to obtain approval for their isolation protocol. This is because the costly, certified sterilization equipment and permitted processes are not available at a large number of plants.
Both materials satisfy the highly stringent requirements of the health sector, including the biological compatibility of plastics.
