RGS Dosing Stand for Liquid Colors

With Gravimetric Control

The RGS dosing stand on an injection molding application with self-calibrating balance (figure: Riverdale Global LLC)

The RGS stand for the supply, dosing and replenishment of liquid colors from Riverdale Global LLC, Perth Amboy, NJ/USA, now features gravimetric control. According to the manufacturer, this allows liquid colors to be handled almost as easily as pellet color concentrates. The color tank is not opened at any time, and non-drip connections prevent accidental escape of the color.

The drum of the dosing stand, with liquid color, is mounted on a self-calibrating balance, which signals the weight of the contents to the control unit to maintain the required amount of color. Dosing is modulated by means of an air-regulated actuator connected to the liquid color pump. The pump is located in a sealed drum. The operator enters the target shot weight of the part and the letdown ratio into the control unit, which automatically regulates the precision after it has determined the cumulative error over a number of cycles. The aim of this is to reduced color waste, e.g. due to operator errors.

Gravimetric metering can keep the color dosage tolerance to within 0.1 %, thus preventing over-coloring. According to the manufacturer, the color consumption can be reduced by 5 to 10 % compared to properly calibrated volumetric metering systems.

Networking software is also available, which allows the dosing stand to be connected to the network for centralized control and monitoring. The real-time consumption data are tracked to allow the inventory levels to be monitored and re-order points can be flagged when they fall below a certain level. Material consumption accounting allows material costs to be logged and inventory values tracked in real time.

The dosing stand also does not use a urethane delivery tube. The manufacturer supplies sealed delivery tubes with quick release couplings. The tubes are available in various lengths, and can be stored in a rack on the unit. A feed-throat adapter is also included depending on the application.
