Reverse Engineering: thinkreshape

Under the name of thinkreshape think3 GmbH, Oberhaching, Germany, is now supplying a tool for replicating the surfaces of scanned models which reproduces the 3-D data of a physical article in a very short time. By this means three-dimensional objects of various sizes are recorded as digital 3-D copies consisting of a cloud of dots (mesh). This novel solution can quickly import one or more meshes and alter them using tools for decimalization, smoothing and direct changes (Global Shape Modeling on Meshes). The finished copy is then available for rapid prototyping, finite element analyses, simulation, processing and quality assurance.

The product was developed for companies in the sectors of automotive engineering, transport, mold making, product design, consumer goods and medical technology. It is used whenever a physical prototype or another genuine component is to be reproduced in the form of a 3-D model from wood, synthetic resin or other materials so that it can be varied or machined.

The user benefits from the short data capture and reproduction times. The principal advantage, however, arises when the program output is incorporated into the thinkdesign CAD environment and the thinkPLM data management system. Integration with thinkID, thinkdesign, thinktooling and thinkPLM opens up the enormous range of tools to the complete solution from think3: modeling functionalities, GSM subassemblies, rendering, 2-D drawings and PLM for comprehensive life cycle management of all information from the reverse engineering.
