Recycled Flake System
Flakes to Bottles
At the Drinktec 2009, Husky Injection Molding Systems, Dudelange, Luxemburg, demonstrated (in operation) the world’s first injection molding system that has been designed specifically to produce preforms approved for food contact applications with a high percentage of post-consumer waste in the form of PET flakes (bottle reclaim). Until now, flakes have been considered difficult to process. With this development, the company hopes to improve the environmental friendliness of this packaging material further.
At the exhibition, a HyPET RF 300 with a clamping force of 3,000 kN produced preforms with a part weight of 33.6 g in a 72-cavity mold (type: EcoBase) from a 50/50 mixture of virgin PET material and flakes. The cycle time of 10.5 seconds is in the range of what one would expect for preforms produced strictly from virgin PET. Systems for this application are equipped with a high-performance package (HPP). System improvements include an in-line melt filtration system that prevents entry of foreign particles and a newly designed injection unit. This means that processors who have not used recycled flakes to date can now incorporate them into their products as well. The recycled PET is provided by Cleanaway PET International in Rostock, Germany. All of the bottles produced from the preforms during the exhibition were returned to Cleanaway to be recycled again. To demonstrate production of bottles, the preforms were used to blow mold 1.5-liter bottles for carbonated beverages at the Sidel booth.
