Trunk Load Floors – Minimizing Warpage
In a sandwich construction alongside fixing the glass fiber mats the PU matrix also binds the paper honeycomb core to the surface skin. Application of the material is a highly significant factor in this context. For this process Hennecke GmbH, Sankt Augustin, Germany, has developed their PU-CSM technology which allows a uniform and reproducible distribution of the polyurethane and fibers. This is necessary in respect of warpage and low material usage.
A spray system is first used to wet the semi finished fiber stock on one or both sides with a thermally activated PU system. This allows the processor a comparatively long open time for the spray coating, making targeted material deposition in particular part areas (edges, borders, load application points), the manufacture of very large parts or indeed the use of tools with two or three cavities much easier to achieve. The part is then compression molded to its final shape.
Depending on the plant configuration it is possible to service up to three mold carriers with a single spray unit meaning that this is capable of producing 2,000 parts per day.
