High-Grade LFT Pellets for Lightweight Construction

The main focuses of the appearance of ProTec Polymer Processing GmbH, Bensheim, Germany, are system solutions for efficient, flexible and cost-effective drying, conveying and metering of pellets and regrind. This is performed using the established Somos equipment. On show will be, i. a. in the material drying field, the new generation of stationary modular drying systems in combination with a dry air generator of the Somos D series. From the metering segment, the Somos Gramix E gravimetric metering system will be presented.
One highlight being present by ProTec is the Solido LFT production system, a system tailored to the cost-effective production of high-quality long fiber-reinforced thermoplastics with fiber lengths of pellet length. It is suitable for the production of a wide range of long fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (LFT) with a variety of polymer matrices and different fiber reinforcements. This results in composite materials with fibers of pellet length – common in practice are lengths from 7 mm to 25 mm – produced using the pultrusion method. With the Solido technology, the fiber strands in the impregnating mold are separated into the filaments and then the individual fibers are sheathed with the polymer melt. Fiber contents of up to 60 % w/w can be achieved with the technology. After further processing, the LFT pellets produce parts with a very good surface quality and high mechanical strength. They can be processed by injection molding and give the produced parts not only high strength, rigidity and impact resistance, but also a high heat resistance and a significant boost to lightweight construction.
