Process Integration: Inmold gasket

Three Steps in a Single Operation

Process Integration: Inmold gasket

fw mould tec GmbH, Micheldorf, Austria, has filed a patent application for a process that integrates insertion of gaskets and placement of flexible labels when producing pipe fittings. With this process, three production steps are combined into a single operation. The process (In-mold gasket) makes it possible to insert the gasket of a push-together part such as a fitting with only one mold opening motion. Previously, gaskets were always inserted either by hand or with the aid of an automatic insertion device. Moreover, this technique permits use of custom-designed sealing lips. Verifying material compatibility is essential in order to ensure adhesion of the gasket to the molded part.

The previous commonly employed use of engraving to mark molded parts is no longer employed. Changes to engraved inserts were always costly. In comparison, in-mold labeling provides enormous flexibility and design freedom. Customers can design labels to incorporate specific information and match them to the intended function. Design features ensure that the label is not damaged during mold filling. The label is placed in the open mold by a robot that simultaneously removes the finished part from the mold.

In addition, the process permits use of RFID labels and thus noncontact identification of objects with the aid of radio waves. For this purpose, the labels must contain RFID chips.
