Polystyrene base microgranulates
Microgranulates Increase Efficiency
A special polymerization method now enables polystyrene base microgranulates with tight particle size distributions of approx. 450 µm. These microgranulates are produced by Ineos Nova of Marl, Germany, and marketed by Ultrapolymers Deutschland GmbH of Augsburg, Germany. They can be used directly and without additional treatment steps as substrates for compounds and masterbatches. Their large surface-to-volume ratio contributes to high final product quality by enabling a very homogeneous distribution of dyes or powdered additives. In additional to universally applicable clear-transparent grades, a newly developed microgranulate is now available that has been modified for impact toughness. All grades are suitable for food contact.
130M universal grades and the 170M high-temperature resistant grade combine high flowability with the high stiffness typical for polystyrene. The mechanical properties of the 171M grade are comparable to those of 170M with its factor 15 reduced viscosity, but it has been optimized for extrusion applications.
Impact-tough modified 524G microgranulate is a recent addition to Ultrapolymers’ portfolio. It passes through a special grinding process that leaves flattened, sharp contours in place of the otherwise typical rounded-off surfaces. Operational tests indicate that this geometric shape enhances dispersion in certain applications and can thus improve homogeneity, e.g. for manufacturing dye concentrates.
