High Gloss as if Painted
A special compound for exterior automotive applications was developed by Romira GmbH, Pinneberg, over the past year. The deep-black high-gloss Rotec PMMA compound is currently being used in series production by a leading automaker for unpainted exterior parts. The compound exhibits important properties that are beneficial in everyday use. In addition to a relatively high impact strength, parts molded from this material have a black, paint-like high-gloss surface. Painting of the part is no longer necessary. The outstanding UV resistance as well as acceptable scratch resistance - compared to other plastics in use - are prerequisites for using the compound in exterior applications. The brilliant color depth is also guaranteed after several years on the road.
The product represents a practical alternative to the traditional acrylic ester/styrene/acrylonitrile (ASA) resins still used by most OEMs in the bumper area. Additional compounds with new, custom-formulated properties are under development. The PMMA compound is suitable for processing by both injection molding and extrusion.
