A Clear Matter for Medical Technology, Pharmaceuticals and Bodycare

NAS styrene-methyl- methacrylate (SMMA) and Zylar MBS grades

NAS styrene-methyl-methacrylate (SMMA) and the impact-resistant Zylar MBS grades (methyl-methacrylate-butadiene-styrene) from Ineos Nova complement the sales range of Ultrapolymers Deutschland GmbH, Augsburg, Germany. All the grades fulfill the requirements in respect of bio-compatibility (ISO 10993), food compatibility (FDA) and USP Class VI. They are highly transparent, scratch-resistant, resistant to chemicals and absorb only a small amount of water. Their low density and the improved processing properties claimed by the manufacturers by comparison to PMMA, PC and MABS have a positive impact on production costs.

Compared with other highly transparent materials, articles made of NAS grades 21 and 30 are suitable for dishwasher temperatures of up to 65°C in some cases. Their pronounced resistance to yellowing means they can be sterilized with alcohol, ETO (ethylene oxide) or gamma radiation. Recyclate can be readily processed at the same time.

The newly-developed Zylar 631 can be processed at low temperatures and pressures and thus constitutes a favorable alternative to other high-impact and transparent plastics.

These materials are used in medical technology for valves on respiration and dialysis equipment and for flaps and inserts, for example, as well as for products from the pharmaceuticals and cosmetics sectors and for household and bodycare products.
