Removing Oil Contamination
Ground PA11 residues are generated in large quantities after the sealing of an oil well, when deep-sea oillines are no longer required and must be brought to shore. However, this highquality plastic waste is highly contaminated with oil after having being in service for up to decades. Besides the oil residues adhering to the surface, compounding is also greatly hampered by oil that has diffused into the plastic. The Multi Rotation System (MRS) extruder from Gneuss Kunststofftechnik GmbH, Bad Oeynhausen, Germany, can compound and decontaminate the polyamide 11 regrind in a single operation. Chemical washing is not required before processing in the extruder and wastewater treatment is therefore unnecessary.
The high degassing and decontamination performance is achieved by means of a large multiscrew drum,which generates a melt surface 25 times larger than a twin-screw extruder, and a particularly high surface renewal rate. Optimum degassing takes place here even with a moderate vacuum from 20 to 40 mbar.At the same time, not only moisture, but other volatile components, in this case oil residues, can be extracted from the melt. A rotating melt filter (type: RSFgenius 90),with its large active filter surface and pressure and process constancy, ensures reliable removal of the very small contaminants.
