Solutions with Flexible Mold Concept
Micro and sprueless, single-cavity injection molding will be the main themes presented by Dr. Boy GmbH & Co. KG, Neustadt-Fernthal, Germany, at this year’s Chinaplas from April 19 to 22 in Shanghai, China. A model of the XS series launched last year will mold high-precision technical parts, while the Boy XS V insert molding machine will produce a small nail file. Both machines combine the basic idea of a modular production concept with simple, inexpensive, single-cavity molds that can easily be changed and so achieve fast, effective and flexible production. Medium-sized companies will perceive here the clear advantages of smaller machines over larger ones.
The injection molding machine manufacturer had already previously introduced a special mold concept for the Boy XS. The mold frame remains fixed in the machine. When a change of product is required, all the operators have to do is simply change over cassettes containing the mold cavities. Molds for new parts can be produced quickly and inexpensively. Mold changeovers can be completed within a few minutes. Another important advantage is that simple parts can generally be molded without a sprue or hot runner so that the costs and handling time associated with these are completely eliminated. In addition, individual parts can be produced – from pellet to packaged product – on or in the immediate vicinity of the injection molding machine fully automatically and therefore with high efficiency.
The third exhibit, a Boy 90 E (clamping force: 900 kN), will produce cable binders on a 24-cavity mold. The servo motor pump drive reduces the energy requirement by over 50 % compared with fully hydraulic injection molding machines with an electronically controlled variable displacement pump. According to the manufacturer, the energy requirement is even below that of electro-mechanical machines, which, incidentally, have higher connected loads. All three machines are fitted with the Procan Alpha control system, which combines precision and repeatability with ease of operation. The energy consumption of the motor and heating system can be read separately off an energy monitor. This option can be actively used to optimize energy consumption by changing the machine settings.
