Microcrystalline high-performance polyamide Trogamid myCX

Evonik Industries AG, Essen, Germany, has developed a microcrystalline high-performance polyamide with the trade name Trogamid myCX specially for manufacturing sports glass and sunglass lenses. The new high-end material features higher purity and optimized processing. Lenses can thus be manufactured more efficiently. The microcrystalline material can also be used to make clear films that are suitable for laminating and decorating optical parts.

Trogamid myCX is permanently transparent with a light transmittance of 92%. Because of the high-performance polyamide’s low density and high break and scratch resistance, sunglass lenses made of this material are not only exceptionally lightweight but also very safe. The resistance to aggressive agents is much better than for other transparent plastics so the wearer does not have to think twice about using perfumes, sunscreens and cleaning agents.

These features are attributable to the polyamide’s microcrystalline structure. The crystallites, embedded in an amorphous environment, are so minute that they do not disperse visible light and the material appears to be transparent to the human eye. Thus, the positive properties attributable to crystallinity, such as stress-cracking resistance, are retained without the material turning white. Trogamid myCX is thus unrivalled in combining the advantages of an amorphous polymer with those of a partially crystalline polymer.
