Melamine resin foam
The Camera Hears Everything
At the TV studios of the Portuguese television station RTP (Rádio e Televisão de Portugal) in Lisbon, sound absorbers made from Basotect are now improving acoustic quality. Thanks to its outstanding sound-absorbing properties, melamine resin foam of BASF SE, Ludwigshafen, Germany, provides for optimal speech intelligibility. The Portuguese company Vicoustic advised the station on how to implement the acoustic concept. Flexicel, a BASF customer from Portugal, manufactured the sound absorbers that are now hanging on the studio walls and ceiling.
"Television studios are often located in large halls. However, the clarity of the spoken word is especially important for television. That is why the acoustics have to be perfect", says César Carapinha, CEO of Vicoustic. "In addition, the fire safety requirements in studios, with all their technical equipment and the constant influx and outflux of people, are particularly high". That is why both companies opted for Basotect UF. On top of its outstanding acoustical properties, it meets Class B of the European Fire Safety Directive EN13501. It is also more flexible than other Basotect grades allowing for more freedom in processing and design, a quality which is especially in demand for the soundproofing of interiors.
For the RTP studio the dark gray Basotect UF was partly covered with black laminated elements. Dark colors are important for television since the use of the blue box technique, which makes it possible to project any studio design onto a projector screen, is so prevalent. Dark surroundings are essential for creating the optimal image quality.
Thanks to its favorable combination of various properties - temperature resistant and flame retardant, light, elastic, sound absorbent and heat insulating - Basotect is suitable for the acoustic and thermal insulation of buildings, vehicles and trains. There are now a number of different thermoset foam grades for various applications.
