Measurement system for extruded profiles

Dätwyler Rubber, Schattdorf, Switzerland, have now integrated a measurement system for extruded profiles (manufacturer: Pixargus GmbH, Würselen, Switzerland) into their production lines. In the sensor head of the system, a continuous line is projected around the extruded profile by LEDs. Six CCD cameras (Charge-Coupled Device) positioned around the whole circumference compare this line (actual contour) between one and three times a second with the nominal contour stored in the system. The measurement accuracy is roughly 100 µm. In order to set up profile geometries in the system, the nominal contour is transmitted directly from the CAD system to the measuring system via the in-house data network. The measuring points and the tolerances can be selected at a touch screen monitor.

The measured values are highlighted in color and stored together with a trend curve. Yellow values signal the reaching of a “warning limit”. All the measurement data can be traceably stored on a server according to the order number. The recordings permit, for example, the visualization of fluctuations during extrusion or the influence of the vulcanization temperature over the complete lot size. The modular design of the system allows it to be expanded to include a further module for automatic detection of surface flaws.
