Laser Welding of Large-Format Components
In the automotive industry, in particular, there is a growing demand for welding of large-size components. LPKF WeldingQuipment GmbH, Fürth, Germany, presents the PowerWeld 3D 8000 laser welding system, which can join parts of up to 100 x 70 cm with welds seams between 1 and 5 mm. In the quasi-simultaneous welding process, the weld seam is generated by "wobbling," in which the laser beam is guided with small amplitude over the weld path, transversely to the feed direction. Furthermore, the system can automatically compensate for changes of the vertical position by adjusting the amplitude. Information about the quality of welding can be provided with the aid of the seam path and the welding time.
With a range of improvements to the technical components, the PowerWeld 6600 laser welding system of the stand-alone series has been enhanced. The system operates with a servo clamping technology and uses a soft PLC in order to increase flexibility and meet future challenges. The modular design further improves flexibility and leads to a more cost-efficient production unit.
Another innovation is the ProSeT 3D CAM software, which proposes independent welding paths directly from the CAD data. An integrated editor helps with the manual adaptation of the waypoints and welding parameters. It is thereby possible to derive the welding process from the part layouts extremely quickly. Furthermore, the developer can access all process data and change individual parameters, whereas, during the production process, in operator mode, only the data and commands necessary for production are available.
