Laser welding is a specialty of the Laser Welding division of LPKF Laser & Electronics AG, Garbsen, Germany. In Friedrichshafen, Germany, the company exhibited four systems ideally suited to plastics applications. Among these is the series of InlineWeld systems whose extremely compact welding heads permit installation in practically any production system. Laser source and controls are housed in a separate module. Thanks to this construction, production lines can be expanded easily to incorporate modules for laser welding. The stand-alone systems from the PowerWeld line are still relatively compact. The machines are equally well-suited for short, moderate and long production runs and weld both small and large parts. Throughput can be increased even further through use of the rotary index table.

The welding heads of the InlineWeld series need only minimal space, since the laser source and controls can be set up separately (figure: LPKF)

The Twinweld3D robot-assisted hybrid welding system is designed for welding large, three dimensional free-form parts in a heat field. It is ideal for high-quality and economical welding of appearance applications, e. g. taillights of automobiles. PrecisionWeld, which can be used for even the smallest microfluidic devices, is a specialty of LPKF. The new "Clear Joining" process permits welding of transparent plastics without additives.

A number of welded parts were displayed for each of these laser systems to demonstrate the possible applications of the machines.
