Long Air Vent Slats for Comfortable Motoring

Long Air Vent Slats for Comfortable Motoring

Key Plastics LLC., Löhne, Germany, in collaboration with K. D. Feddersen Holding GmbH, Hamburg, Germany, has developed an air vent for the VW Touran that features longer slats than in any other vehicle type. The component is made from Akromid B3 GF 60 4 RM-M, a blend of polyamide and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).

The air vent slats on the VW Touran MPV are exceptionally long. To ensure consistent operating forces, they must be dimensionally stable and absorb minimal moisture  (© K.D. Feddersen)

This material was selected for the slats because it provides a good surface finish coupled with high stiffness. It is suitable for components exposed to high mechanical service stress and belongs to a product range consisting only of reinforced compounds with different glass fiber contents. The material is supplied in three versions: "standard", "surface-modified", and "with increased chemical resistance". The blends combine the high stiffness and low moisture absorption of PBT with the wide processing window and very good surface finish of polyamide.

Precisely these properties were required for the long slats. The reduced moisture absorption of 1 % is on a par with that of semi-aromatic blends, according to the manufacturer, and so permits close-tolerance design. The elastic modulus is only slightly decreased, so that the slats maintain a consistently high degree of stiffness under different climatic conditions. In addition, despite the high glass fiber content of 60 %, a very good surface finish can be achieved. Thanks to the blending technology, the glass fibers are optimally incorporated into the matrix and are hardly visible on the surface.

According to the manufacturer, the material satisfies Volkwagen’s requirement for the component to be produced without the need for additional painting and at a mold temperature below 100 °C. So this blend is a cost-effective alternative to semi-aromatic polyamides.
