Liquid silicone rubbers

Give me a Bite

Liquid silicone rubbers

Wacker Chemie AG, Munich, Germany, has developed a new product range of liquid silicone rubbers. Elastosil LR 3040 is characterized by a high cross-linking speed combined with a high tear propagation resistance, also known as notched strength. The liquid silicones can be processed by injection molding, but allow significantly shorter cycle times to be achieved than for standard liquid silicone rubbers with the same mold temperature. At present the materials are available in the hardness range from 40 to 50 Shore A.

The materials are used in particular in baby care products with their high safety demands, such as for babies’ dummies, pacifiers or teething rings.

These objects that babies and children can put in their mouths must not, in particular, contain any plasticizers. In addition, the material must be such that no pieces can be broken off and swallowed even when exposed to extreme loads. Apart from their use in baby care products, the liquid silicones are also suitable for use in numerous other applications in the automotive industry and in the household and leisure sectors. The advantages of the product series are reflected in particular in the production of thin-walled components. Examples here are geometrically and mechanically sophisticated components, such as diaphragms or valves in automobile production. The new product series will be on show at the K 2010 in Düsseldorf.
