Mechanical Drive System for Needle Valve Systems
The needles of shut-off nozzles are usually controlled via a range of different drive systems (pneumatic, hydraulic and increasingly electrical). This technology has the advantage that the user can adjust the "valve closed" position individually for each cavity. Often there isn’t enough space in the molds for the necessary utility lines and cable ducts. According to Thermoplay S.p.A., Pont Saint Martin, Italy, its new lift plate system combines the advantages of a simple individual drive (moving plate) with those of conventional systems.
The small space requirement of this closure system and the corresponding mechanical drive permits the cavities to be located relatively close together without losing the advantages of current valve controls. A patent pending lock in the coupling permits each individual needle valve to be decoupled from the drive plate, while at the same time achieving complete blockage in the "needle closed" position. This function is necessary for interrupting the melt flow to one or more cavities if necessary. This coupling element contains a function – also patented – for precise adjustment of the needle depth. Both functions, opening/closing a cavity and adjusting the valves, can be executed externally without dismantling the mold components.
